Tobias Gremmler, a leading figure in new media scenography, serves as Professor of Practice at the School of Creative Media. Renowned for his remarkably innovative work, Gremmler seamlessly blends the virtual and the real, redefining the possibilities of performance in new media. His cutting-edge immersive experiences integrate motion capture, motion graphics, interface design, and music, and have been featured in a diverse range of artistic settings, including theatre, dance, concerts, and exhibitions. Additionally, Gremmler has engaged in digital media motion graphics and interface design for a variety of brands, including Apple, Adidas, BMW, Getty Images, NEC, O2, Phillips, Samsung, Siemens, and Sony.
Gremmler has an extensive teaching and consulting background, and among his notable academic works is the book Creative Education and Dynamic Media, published by CityUHK Press in 2014. This publication offers practical guidance and creative exercises in media design, drawing inspiration from the Bauhaus School’s core principle of integrating simplicity and functionality in aesthetic design.
Gremmler’s extensive portfolio includes acclaimed visualizations of Chinese Opera and Kung Fu (2016), which brought him global recognition. His stunning motion visualizations capture the fluidity and strength of Kung Fu masters, transforming their movements into mesmerizing geometric and abstract video art. In “Always Moving” (2017), Gremmler broke new ground by digitally visualizing the gestures of a conductor, collaborating with Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra. Among his most notable works are his collaborations with various musicians, including Chinese singer Valen Hsu, Tat Ming Pair, Miriam, Hacken Lee, Jeff Chang, Denise Ho, French singer Mylène Farmer, Icelandic singer Björk, and Italian electronic musician Anyma, creating music videos and concert visuals from 2011 to 2023.
In his 2021 exhibition “The Changing Room,” created in partnership with the H&M Foundation and Fotografiska, Gremmler presented installations where fabrics and textiles appeared to grow from human skin, forming a living, intimate connection between the human body and fashion. This exhibition encouraged contemplation on the respect and responsibility towards the materials and resources in fashion, advocating for a harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. During the 59th Venice Biennale's Biennale Danza in 2022, Gremmler unveiled “Fields – A Scenographic Media Installation.” This innovative work blended elements of installation, theatre, and dance, featuring a frameless, continuous motion artwork where abstract bodies intertwined, collided, and transformed. Gremmler’s latest work, “Mythical Creatures—Studies of Shape and Motion” (2024), was developed for the launch of SCM’s 25th anniversary exhibition, “Converging Parallels.”
