Continuing her career-spanning contemplation of home and reunion, Tsang Tsui shan (Flowing Stories, 2014) once again turns the camera on her home village of Ho Chung. This time, she documents her village’s Tai Ping Ching Chiu Festival, a once-in-a-decade event that brings villagers back from all over the world to the village. But when the world is hit by a global pandemic, what will happen to this long-awaited reunion? Made amidst great change in Hong Kong and her own life, Tsang’s latest love letter to her home is a melancholic and wistful affair.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

In Buddhist belief, everything in the world is inter-connected, and small networks of relationships can affect the entire universe. The once-in-a-decade Tai Ping Ching Chiu Festival is an important traditional event in Ho Chung Village. It represents the reunion and collective prayer of villagers, but will the fate of one small village affect that of the entire world? Due to over consumption and the ravaging of nature, a global pandemic is raging across the world. Many countries have closed their borders, severing the ties between people and challenging familial and community relationships. As a villager and a documentary filmmaker, I hope to reexamine the meaning of home and reunion through continuous recording of my own home village. As an observer and participant, I can never ignore my identity as a family member. Winter Chants is an experiment, observing from an unknowing position, waiting for the gathering of energy and recording every moment in ever-changing people and nature.

大士出巡，肅靜迴避。西貢蠔涌聯鄉太平清醮十年一會，既是酬謝神恩祈求平安的習俗，也是散居海外的村民回來聚首的時機。曾翠珊以《河上變村》（2014）記錄了上一屆清醮與自己祖家蠔涌的變遷，事隔十年，這一屆卻遇上疫情爆發，社會遭逢巨變，講到未來只有懷疑再懷疑，到底清醮是否還能辦下去？鏡頭不單記錄傳統風俗，也刻劃人情，年輕一代嘗試辦區報為社區發聲，菲傭滯留在港，海外村民無法歸來，風雨飄搖，影片也在離散的日子裏，叩問家的定義。

佛教相信萬物永遠無法獨立存在，極微小的關係網也可牽動整個宇宙。十年一度的聯鄉清醮是蠔涌村的盛事，在清醮的召喚下，村民的團聚和禱告，能否改變宇宙的運行？一個小村落的命運如何與全球命運互相影響？有幾百年歷史的西貢蠔涌村是我祖先一直居住的地方，河流與山林見證我們歷代的成長。新一屆清醮來臨，感到需要為一個十年關口作新的記載，把族群的集體禱告和團聚的影像記錄下來。於五天的祈福與食物分享當中，感謝大自然的美好和珍惜鄉民彼此之間的愛。通過不斷記載故鄉傳統習俗，重新看家和團聚的意義。《冬未來》記錄人和大自然變化中的每一個當下。

“Ho Chung Tetralogy” includes the interactive web piece All About My Ho Chung, the short film The Life and Times of Ho Chung Village, the feature film Big Blue Lake, and the director’s first feature-length documentary Flowing Stories. Through depicting the recurrent reunions and partings of the villagers and the intimate details of their lives, the film examines issues about urban and rural development. Filmed on locations in Hong Kong and in various cities in France and UK, Flowing Stories is an ode to village life and a journey in search of Hong Kongers’ collective roots. Tsang’s camera records the beautiful scenery and time-honored customs of the local village, as well as a once-a-decade village festival, which serves as a continuation of a tradition passed down through generations and a testament of family bonding. Today, Hong Kong citizens are confused about the future, the director hopes to review the village’s development in order to search for the meaning of home and diaspora through this meaningful local documentary.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

Ho Chung Village in Sai Kung is a village of few hundred years of history. As a native villager who was born and raised here, the changes in the village over the years give me mixed feelings. After all those years living in the village, my bonding to the village and the land has inspired me to create related works. There has never been any documentary depicting the life of the native villagers in Hong Kong. As a native villager and a Hong Kong film director, I have been recording the people and the stories of the village through sound and moving images since 2001, with an aim to preserve the local history and culture. Flowing Stories enable us to witness the beautiful changes of the community.

On one hand, Flowing Stories captures the essence of the Village Festival in 2011, while it also depicts the story of the Lau family, my neighbor in the village. Flowing Stories explores the issue of diaspora and the definition of “home”. I am a village girl who has been living in the village throughout my entire life, while the editor of the film, Mary Stephen is a Chinese diaspora who has left Hong Kong for decades. Flowing Stories can be seen as our dialogue about home, one’s roots and the experience of drifting. Facing the flowing of life, I feel that returning to where one was born is the only way to achieve a sense of peacefulness and comfort.

As the local traits of places around the world all start to blur, and when heritage and tradition begin to disappear, I hope that Flowing Stories can inspire you to rethink the meaning of history, home and root, as well as the relationship between tradition and development.

曾翠珊繼《蠔涌》（網絡互動作品）、《河上風光》（短片）和《大藍湖》（長片）後的「蠔涌四部曲」，精心經營的首齣紀錄片製作。從蠔涌村民的聚散離合、生活點滴，看城鄉經濟的發展。導演走訪英、法等國家多個城市，用鏡頭捕捉美景和風俗，探討漂流他鄉的村民對鄉土的感情，尋回那遺忘失落的根。十年一度的太平清醮，除了是代代相傳的禮節儀式，更是家庭團聚及遊子思鄉情的見證。在今日香港人面對不明前景，思考何去何從之際，導演希望藉著作品，從離鄉別井的經歷去探索家的定義，並從社群流徙的故事去反思過去和展望村落的未來發展。這是一部極具誠意及啟發性的本地紀錄片製作。

導演的話

西貢蠔涌村是一條有幾百年歷史的村落。我從出生到現在一直沒有搬離過此地，眼見四周變化的人和地，心裏百感交集。於村中生活多年，既然與村落有一種緣份，就應好好地利用與土地之間的情感與關係創作。香港從沒有這類關心原居民的紀錄片，作為蠔涌村原居民的我，從2001年至今以個人力量，用聲音及影像這媒介去記載村中喜愛的人和事，保留該地方的歷史、文化及其土地的故事。從紀錄人們的臉及傳統習慣，《河上變村》可以觀察到一個族群那美麗的變化。

《河上變村》一方面紀錄了2011年的太平清醮，另一方面也講述了我的鄰居劉氏一家的故事。《河上變村》審視記錄了流徙，也探討了家的定義。一直留在家鄉的我遇上移居海外多年的剪接師雪蓮，為《河上變村》展開了對家、根、故鄉及漂流的一場對話。面對生命的流動，感受回歸出生地的平靜與安慰。

當世界各地的地方特色變得模糊、歷史古跡及傳統習俗漸漸消失時，我希望觀眾看完《河上變村》後能反思歷史、家和根的意義，以及傳統與發展的關係。
