La Fura dels Baus (LFDB) is a theatre company born during dark socio-political rule in Spain. Working since 1979, LFDB went from being a street theatre company reacting to the end of a 40-year obscurantist dictatorship and the drafting of the Spanish Constitution to becoming one of the most-sought-after companies in the world. For 35 years and counting, they have produced works that pierce through socio-political change of Spain and the world.

Now hailed as one of the most innovative theatre companies in the world, they have created a punk, post-modernist theatre language (the “Furan language”) that revolutionized the role of audiences in a performance.  Their production in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games demonstrated to the world the power of theatre and has since became a benchmark for the opening ceremony of the most important event of the world.  LFDB has also sculpted edgier images for large brands Mercedes, BMW and Pepsi, etc.

In this seminar, Pep Gatell, the Director of LFDB, will share with us the company’s vision, development and how theatre shapes society.

Directors’ biography

Pep Gatell (1958), an artistic director of La Fura dels Baus since 1980, is one of the founders of the company. He has been experimenting, in his works, with the most recent technology, such as synthesizers, 3D-stereoscopic images, phone applications, etc. He has staged over 100 installations, macroespectáculos, theater, cinema, and opera productions, showcased across the world. He has worked in different capacities as a director, technical producer, video artist and programmer with well-known collaborators, in Barcelona as well as abroad. Gatell’s vision has led to groundbreaking projects with the digital theater lab WIProgress-97 group, Art Futura, and the U.S. Air Force. Gatell has lectured at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Technical University of Madrid, and ELISAVA Barcelona School of Design and Engineering.

In 2014, Gatell, overseeing the technological area, and fellow directors premiere the world’s first smart show M.U.R.S., which allows the audience to interact with the show through their Smartphones.
