Richard Griffiths OBE is famous for his filmic role of Harry Potter’s nasty muggle uncle Vernon Dursley. In real, Richard is a signing CODA whose parents are Deaf. He became the first patron of Deaffest (UK’s Deaf Film Festival) in 2012. The documentary is an interview of him shot before his death.

Deaf boy Jason loves dancing. He is aspired to show his talents on the stage in future. One day, he encounters a street dance master CK and asks to be CK’s pupil. CK is touched by Jason’s sincerity and decides to teach him how to dance. Beyond his main challenge of deafness, Jason has to deal with his teammates’ boycott and his Deaf girlfriend’s resentment. Can Jason succeed at last? In reality, to count the beats, Deaf dancers usually bare foot for feeling the vibrations from the wooden floor, or notice the direction of choreographer or sign interpreters.

Why Do Hearing People Watch Deaf Films?

Text: Xavier Tam / Chairperson (Hearing), Organizing Committee, The 4th Hong Kong International Deaf Film Festival George Montgomery, researcher of Donaldson’s College, a Scottish Deaf school in Edinburgh, had classified 70 labels on the pigeon-holes, euphemisms and categorisations for the D/deaf people. His list includes DODA (an acronym of “Deaf of Deaf Adults”, i.e. “deaf children born to deaf parent(s)”), DOHA (an acronym of “Deaf of Hearing Adults”, i.e. “deaf children born to hearing parent(s)”), “occupational deafness”, “deafened in adulthood” and “old age deafness”. In addition to these labels, the Deaf community has some labels for describing certain types of hearing people. CODA and SODA are acronyms of “Children of Deaf Adults” (i.e. “hearing children born to deaf parent(s)”) and “Siblings of Deaf Adults” (i.e. “hearing siblings of Deaf people”). Richard Griffiths OBE, famous for his role as nasty muggle uncle in Harry Potter, is a signing CODA. He is the first patron of UK’s Deaf Film Festival “Deaffest”. These labels show that even if you are hearing, you would not know if your family, offsrpings or friends would be deaf or deafened. Owing to accident or aging, you might be deafened.

In fact, not everyone is suitable for using cochlear implants and hearing aids. Culturally Deaf people consider Deaf Culture facilitated by sign language is more important than cochlear implants and hearing aids. Many mainstream media depictions of the deaf people misrepresent the Deaf community. Watching the films made by the culturally Deaf people and their allies allows the public understand Deaf Culture and sign language. So, watching Deaf films is a good pastime.

The slogan of The 4th Hong Kong International Deaf Film Festival is “Screening Deafhood”. We aim at bridging the gap between the Deaf and the hearing for building an inclusive and harmonious society.

為什麼健聽人士要看聾人電影？

文：譚兆仁／第四屆香港國際聾人電影節籌委會（健聽）主席

蘇格蘭愛丁堡聾人學校Donaldson’s College研究員George Montgomery曾撰書闡述70種對聾人及弱聽人士的分類。當中分類包括DODA（「Deaf of Deaf Adults」的英文縮寫，即「聾人所生的聾人子女」）、DOHA（「Deaf of Hearing Adults」的英文縮寫，即「健聽所生的聾人子女」）、職業性失聰、成年變聾及老年性耳聾。除了這些對聾人及弱聽人士的分類，聾人社群也有一些對健聽人士的分類。CODA及SODA分別為「Children of Deaf Adults」（即「聾人所生的健聽子女」）及「Siblings of Deaf Adults」（即「聾人的健聽兄弟姊妹」）的英文縮寫。在《哈利波特》中飾演可惡麻瓜姨丈威農．德思禮的英國演員李查．葛瑞夫斯是一名懂手語的CODA。他更是英國聾人電影節的首位贊助人。這些分類說明了縱使你是健聽，你的下一代或身邊的家人、朋友可能是聾人。又或者，今天你是健聽，但他朝可能因為意外或年老機能衰退而成為聾人。

事實上，人工耳蝸及助聽器也不是所有人都適合使用。對聾人文化認同的聾人認為手語比人工耳蝸及助聽器來得更重要。很多主流媒體呈現的聾人形象與真正的聾人相差甚遠。觀看聾人和認識聾人文化的健聽人士所拍攝的電影可以讓大眾了解聾人文化及手語。所以，從觀看聾人電影學習和了解聾人文化和手語，減少香港成為國際笑柄的機會，不失為一件好事。

第四屆香港國際聾人電影節的口號為「光影聾情」，期望讓觀眾了解聾人所思所想，建立聾健共融的社會。
