Twisting Bamboo: From Traditional to Contemporary
About the Exhibition

Over the course of two days, participating students explored the rich traditions of paper and bamboo crafting, skills rooted in Hong Kong's intangible cultural heritage and enacted communally in festivals and rituals.

Guided through the techniques of binding, mounting, and painting, the students translated these time-honored skills into collaborative creations that reflected their own perspectives, concerns and cultural sensibilities. Their works combine mindful craftsmanship with playful experimentation, showcasing how tradition can be both preserved and reinvented through the hands of a new generation.

Zaat Hap Laa's works provide a resonant counterpoint, situating the students' explorations within the collective's ongoing artistic journey. Together, the works in this exhibition highlight the dialogue between heritage and contemporary expression, learning and creation, and the quiet precision of craftsmanship and the expansive possibilities of imagination.

This exhibition is not only a display of finished artworks but also a celebration of processes: of hands acquiring skills, eyes learning to perceive differently, and hearts invested in both cultural continuity and artistic discovery. It invites the audience to rethink how craft traditions can remain vibrant and meaningful in contemporary life.
