About the Workshop
This 2-day workshop offers a hands-on introduction to working with point clouds, from data capture to real-time interaction.
During the first session, students will be introduced to the concept of point clouds and explore a range of 3D scanning tools, including mobile apps, photogrammetry, and AI-based methods for generating 3D models. Participants will learn how different scanning techniques work, their strengths and limitations, and how they can be used creatively. The session also covers basic data preparation, file conversion, and practical considerations for bringing point cloud data into a creative workflow.
In the second session, students will begin with a prepared point cloud model to learn the core TouchDesigner workflow, including point cloud visualization and building a simple interactive system driven by audio input. Students will then create their own scans using photogrammetry, scanning apps, or AI-based tools, and develop their own 3D models. These self-generated point clouds will be integrated into the interactive systems built in TouchDesigner. By the end of the workshop, participants will have experienced a complete workflow from scanning and basic processing to interactive visualization, which can be adapted to a range of artistic contexts.
Workshop Requirements
1. Basic familiarity with TouchDesigner is required. This workshop is not suitable for complete beginners.
2. Either use the computers in M7024 installed with TouchDesigner and login with EID, or bring a personal laptop with the latest TouchDesigner installed. Organiser will not provide any login EID.
3. A three-button mouse with scroll wheel is required.
4. A device for 3D capture, such as:
- A smartphone with a camera (for photogrammetry), or
- An iPhone Pro with LiDAR (iPhone 12 Pro or newer). The Production Centre provides iPhone 15 Pro devices with LiDAR, available for SCM students to borrow using e-money on a first-come, first-served basis, or
- An iPad Pro with LiDAR
- Scanning devices may be shared, but participants are encouraged to bring their own if available.
Hardware Requirements
CPU: Any recent dual-core or better (Intel i5, Ryzen 5, Apple Silicon M1/M2)
GPU:
- Windows: Dedicated graphics card (NVIDIA or AMD recommended)
- Mac: Any Apple Silicon model (M-series chips)
RAM: 8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended for smoother performance.
Operating System: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) / macOS 13 (Ventura) or newer
About the Instructor
Marta Pang is a Berlin-based multimedia artist from Hong Kong, specializing in generative art and audio-reactive visuals. Since early 2022, she has taken on a daily challenge of creating generative visuals, exploring the creative possibilities of interactive technologies.
The practice has led to collaborations on international stages, with her work showcased at festivals and tours including Burning Man, Coachella, American Idol, and AfterLife, as well as for artists such as Post Malone, Travis Scott, and Wizkid.
