About the Speaker
Kim Dae-seung is an acclaimed Korean filmmaker and currently Dean of the IM KWON TAEK College of Film & Arts at Dongseo University. Kim worked as the renowned director Im Kwon-taek's assistant director nearly a decade before making his acclaimed directing debut with the taboo-breaking melodrama Bungee Jumping of Their Own (2001). He gained critical and commercial success with the Joseon-era mystery Blood Rain (2005), and he directed the disaster melodrama Traces of Love (2006), the hit erotic period drama The Concubine (2012), and the period fantasy The Magician (2015). Kim's work is distinguished by its sensitive direction across diverse genres, from thrillers to poignant romances, consistently demonstrating a masterful command of emotional nuance, performance, and visual storytelling. In this masterclass, he will reflect on his creative journey, his collaborative process, and the evolving landscape of South Korean cinema.
