Abstract
In this lecture, Dutch artist and creative technologist Vincent Ruijters (b. 1988, The Hague) will introduce how physical computing and digital fabrication play an essential role in the creation of his large-scale installations and performances. Working between the Netherlands, Japan, and Indonesia, Ruijters combines textiles, wind, light, and sound to the phenomenology of identity and human relationships within a postcolonial context. Focusing on the technological processes behind his works, he will discuss how microcontrollers, DMX systems, digital modeling, and digital fabrication tools are integrated into his artistic workflow — from concept and research, to prototyping, 3D design, and fabrication. Case studies such as Shadowplay, Cave Inside the Body of Shadows, Selintas Selalu, and the freshly unveiled Crimson Gilt illustrate how technology enables poetic experiences that merge the physical and the intangible. The lecture will also address collaborative production, site-specific adaptation and remote installation workflows with focus on interaction.
About the Speaker
Vincent Ruijters (b. 1988, The Hague) is a Dutch artist whose practice focuses on the phenomenology of intimacy and identity. Through his work, he explores how these fundamental human experiences are shifted and reshaped in contemporary society, aiming to establish new levels of understanding and 'peacemaking' with these evolved bonds. He seeks a synthesis between the poetic, conceptual, and technological, challenging the boundaries between inner and public space.
