The SCM Research Colloquium takes place approximately once a month for graduate students, faculty and professionals from creative media and other related disciplines to present their recent research topic/project. The colloquium offers a great opportunity for ideas exchange and intellectual conversations about one’s work. Each session will feature two speakers, a graduate student/guest speaker and a faculty member.

Each presentation is about 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes open discussion. Seminar introduction and Q&A will be hosted by Prof. Espen Aarseth or Prof. Richard Allen. No registration is needed and light refreshments are provided.

Can Liu: AI-Assisted Semantic Augmentation of User Interfaces

As computing platforms evolve from desktop to mobile and spatial computing, humans are interacting with computers through more natural means such as speech, touch and bodily movements. New milestones of AI can empower such experiences with capabilities to understand semantics. In this talk, I will introduce a few of my recent and ongoing works that augment user interfaces of multiple modalities, assisting tasks ranging from text composition to VR scene creation.

Shengdong Zhao: Fostering Reflective Inquiry: A Dialogue on Value-Driven Research in HCI

As academic metrics increasingly emphasize publication counts, researchers face mounting pressure to prioritize quantity over quality. This talk explores practical strategies for conducting valuable Human-Computer Interaction research while meeting institutional expectations. Drawing from personal experience, I will share approaches to identifying meaningful research problems, developing impactful projects, and maintaining research integrity - all while successfully navigating the publication landscape. The discussion will offer insights for researchers, particularly those early in their careers, on building a sustainable research agenda that balances academic productivity with genuine scientific contribution.
