Background

Mr Charles Chan is a composer, sound designer and sound engineer. With his technical background in sound and unique style in music, Chan has created some hybrid soundtracks incorporating different visual media. Over the years, he has accumulated numerous works across a wide spectrum of activities, from TV broadcasting to cinematic productions. His TV commercial works include Hong Kong Government TVAPI Watch out for Computer Crime which received a Gold Award at the Questar Awards – Corporate CD-ROMs and Videos category, and Hong Kong Government TVAPI Fight Youth Crime: Puppet which received a Silver Award at the 15th Annual Mercury Awards – Public Relations and Corporate Communications category. Among his participation in cinematic productions, he has worked as a sound designer for the documentary film Golden Gate Silver Light that was premiered at the 2013 Hong Kong International Film Festival, and as a music score mixer for the film New York November which was nominated at both the Camerimage and Max Ophüls festivals.

As an educator, Chan believes in sharing his knowledge and experience through actual production projects. Besides requisite theories and concepts, he engages his students with real world projects for the authentic experience and to prepare them for the industry. In the research area, he is working with other colleagues to explore alternative music and sound production methods for emerging cinematic spatial sound formats, as well as different audio recording techniques.
