The interdisciplinary media art exhibition, “Algorithmic Art: Shuffling Space and Time”, would be on show from 27 Dec 2018 to 10 Jan 2019 at City Hall. In the exhibition, more than 20 media artists from different disciplines are going to showcase how art and the sciences may dialogue. Works in Algorithmic Art showcase diverse modes of deploying scientific thinking, including three groups of art machines drawing inspiration from renowned Chinese-language sci-fi, Chang Shi-kuo’s Nebula Suite, created by 11 local artists, Hui Wai-keung Adam’s application and projection of ancient Chinese cosmology onto contemporary Hong Kong sites, Hector Rodriguez’s analysis of a swordplay movie using Artificial Intelligence and Japanese media artist IWAI Toshio’s pre-cinematic toy which marks an early moment of Japanese media art.

“Algorithmic Art” not only reveals the “black box” we usually take for granted in media arts, but also challenges the unexamined, habitual segregation between arts/humanities and the sciences. As a history project tracing the convergent points of art and science, we ask what human desires towards the mysteries of life and the unknown universe has driven the history of technological innovation. Algorithmic Art is curious of the deep time we often neglect.
