The Fourth SCM Distinguished Alumni Award was conferred to Cheung Hon-him Chris (aka h0nh1m) at the 2024 Commencement on 21 June 2024.
Chris graduated with a BA in Creative Media degree in 2009. Since then, he has become an active artist known for installation art and audio-visual performance. With a deep interest in Eastern and Western philosophy, he blends traditions with cutting edge technology to create immersive soundscape, fantastic generative graphics and critical data art.
The RadianceScape project Chris initiated in 2014 has garnered critical acclaim and was featured in Ars Electronica, FILE Festival, EMAF and other international art festivals. The live performance toured to the Sónar Festival and WRO Art Biennale in 2017. The project won the ZKM – Giga Hertz Awards in 2020 and a new commission work was completed in 2022. Chris has created a series of installation artworks on contemporary calligraphy. No Longer Write – Mochiji has been acquired by the Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts and Hong Kong Museum of Art. InkFlux was selected for the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival and has been collected by United Overseas Bank. Most recent works, Ink | Pulse and Waving Script, are commissioned by M+ and Hong Kong Palace Museum respectively.
Chris founded the artist collectives, XCEPT and XCEED. Works of the collectives have been showcased worldwide and have won numerous prestigious international awards. As a solo artist, Chris has been selected for the Award for Young Artist (Media Arts) in 2010 and the DesignSmart Young Design Talent Award in 2011.
Chris has maintained a close relationship with the School since his graduation. He helped in many of the school’s promotional programmes. He has also participated in the recent alumni exhibition. More importantly, the artist collective he founded has recruited many SCM graduates, helping them to launch their creative careers.
Chris’s outstanding artistic achievements, as well as his service to the School, will serve as a role model for SCM students and fresh graduates.
