About this Major

This Major produces creative media professionals proficient in computing technology. Students also gain a solid foundation in the creative processes, including video, sound, photography, storytelling, game design, animation, computer graphics, installation, and interactive digital media production.

The Major combines core courses from the School of Creative Media and the Department of Computer Science to produce graduates who are able to bridge the gap between the technical and artistic sides of the media field. Graduates will be capable of using the latest computing and media technologies in the creation of various media including computer games, animation, special effects, sound, wireless and mobile media, internet application and interactive installation.

  • 4-year (for students with recognised HKDSE or equivalent qualifications)
  • 3-year (for students with recognised HKALE or equivalent qualifications for admission to Advanced Standing I)
  • 2-year (for AD/HD graduates for programmes recognized for admission to Advanced Standing II#)

Degree Curriculum

This Major combines core courses offered by the Department of Computer Science and the School of Creative Media, providing students with a solid background in both areas. Students have the opportunity to mix with students in both academic units while developing team-work skills and a true understanding of both fields.

Computer Science courses cover topics such as computer programming, data structures, database systems, software engineering principles and practices, computer graphics, and AI game programming. These courses will equip students with a solid background in computer science and programming, which will enable them to develop software for the media industry.

Creative Media courses cover topics such as computer animation, computer games, installation, interactivity and industry internship. These courses provide students a good understanding of the creative process and the ability to produce contents for digital media projects.

Through courses and final-year projects, students have ample opportunities to practise their technical and creative skills, work in teams, and develop interesting digital media projects.

Students can also take Free Electives or Minor(s) according to their personal or career interests to fulfill the credit requirement for graduation. A strong Student Advising Scheme is in place to provide essential guidance and mentoring to students as part of their study plan.

Graduation Credit Requirements

(a) Normative 4-year Degree

Sample Study Path
Minimum for graduation: 120 Credit Units including the following:
  • Gateway Education 30 Credit Units (21 credit units' Gateway Education courses and 9 credit units' school-specified courses)
  • School Requirement 21 Credit Units
  • Major Core 27 Credit Units
  • Major Elective 24 Credit Units
  • Free Elective/Minor 18 Credit Units
Students may take additional courses up to the maximum of 144 Credit Units

(b) For students with recognized Advanced Level Examinations or equivalent admitted with Advanced Standing I

Minimum for graduation: 93 Credit Units including the following:
  • Gateway Education 21 Credit Units (15 credit units' Gateway Education courses and 6 credit units' school-specified courses)
  • School Requirement 21 Credit Units
  • Major Core 27 Credit Units
  • Major Elective 24 Credit Units
Students may take additional courses up to the maximum of 114 Credit Units

(c) For Associated Degree / Higher Diploma Graduates admitted with Advanced Standing II

Minimum for graduation: 69 Credit Units including the following:
  • Gateway Education 12 Credit Units (6 credit units' Gateway Education courses and 6 credit units' school-specified courses)
  • School Requirement 9 Credit Units
  • Major Core 27 Credit Units
  • Major Elective 21 Credit Units
Students may take additional courses up to the maximum of 84 Credit Units

Career Prospects

This Major is ideal for students with a strong technical background and are also interested in creative media. Graduates will be qualified to work in a wide range of digital media companies, in areas including computer animation, special effects, computer games, internet-based media and mobile media. Graduates will be part of creative teams and contribute to both the technical and creative aspects of media projects. With a solid background in both technical and creative elements, our graduates will be ideal candidates for future management positions.

    For students admitted in 2017/18 The tuition fee is subject to annual review. If there are changes to the tuition fee set by the HKSAR Government for 2017/18 or subsequent years, the tuition fee may be adjusted.
