Phoebe Man is a multimedia artist and independent curator. She specializes in socially engaged art and community art, and she has extensive experience in engaging audiences with her work. Her animation “Post #MeToo,” which is part of a socially-engaged art project, received an Honorable Mention from the FOLCS International Short Film Competition in New York in 2022. It was shown in 17 international museums and film festivals between 2021and 2022. Her research paper “Creative Strategies for Hong Kong Community Art in Community Building” was published in Hong Kong Visual Arts Overview 2020 in 2022 by Chinese University Press. She curated  “Project C : Art Education Programme @ Fotan” for the Fotan art community . In 2020, she curated a group show called  “Post #MeToo Art,” which focused on the issue of sexual assault.  She presented her research findings on Hong Kong community art in the Hong Kong Visual Arts Yearbook (2020, 2017) and at international conferences held at Seijo University in Tokyo (2022), the National University of Ireland Galway, Ireland (2020) and Leiden University in the Netherlands(2019).

Her edible sculptures and performance titled “Birthday Cakes” (2014-15) were selected for a show organized by the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London and were also invited to be shown at the Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) in Seattle. Her installation “Erosion of Home” (2015) which addresses the issue of housing problems, was invited to be shown in an exhibition curated by the Hong Kong Museum of Art and exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei. The work received overwhelming responses, with more than 6000 visitors participating in the creative process of the work over a period of 2 months. Since 2014, she has conducted 23 workshops titled “If I Were,” which discuss the issue of sexual violence in Taiwan and Hong Kong. More than 500 people have participated in these workshops. The Taipei Women’s Rescue Foundation, one of the organisers, invited her to continue making socially engaged art “One Person One Heart” (2014) and “Free Coloring If I Were” (2018) involving the public. The work “One Person One Heart” is now being shown as a permanent exhibit at the Ama Museum – Museum of Peace and Women’s Human Rights in Taipei with more than 3000 viewers having participated in its creation. Her book titled Phoebe Man’s Socially Engaged Art was published in 2017 to review her nine recent works. She enjoys engaging the audience in her work and values the process of knowledge convection which results in open and diverse answers. This practice allows for pluralistic discussions and democratic expression.

Her animations, videos and installations have been shown at over 200 exhibitions and festivals worldwide, include Anthology Film Archives (2019), LOOP Barcelona 2019 & 2017,  Times Art Center Berlin (2018), “East Asian Video Frames: Shades of Urbanization” in Pori Art Museum in Finland (2016), Asian Film and Video Art Forum in National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul (2015), Shanghai Biennial (2004), Venice Biennale (2003), Gwangju Biennale(2002) and European Media Art Festival (2001).

In 2017, Man has selected as one of the four international artists to join the Wapping Project Berlin Residency. She has successfully obtained a number of project grants from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and has received awards/scholarship from Hong Kong Independent Short Film & Video Competition, Asian Cultural Council, Hong Kong Museum of Art and Philippe Charriol Foundation. Marie Claire magazine has recognized her as one of the ten “Smart Women of the 21st Century”.

Her art work “My Mirror” was published in the book The Palgrave Handbook of Critical Menstruation Studies  (2020) by the global academic publisher Palgrave Macmillan, which was garnered more than 2.1 million downloads. Some of her works have been cited in text books such as Asian Art published by the multinational publishing and education company Pearson (2014), Italian magazine VideoFocus (2014), The Art of Modern China (published by University of California Press, 2012) and Hong Kong Eye: Hong Kong Contemporary Art（published by Parallel Contemporary Arts Limited, Italy, 2012）.

Phoebe Man is one of the founders of Para/Site Art Space and served as the Director of Asian Experimental Video Festival in Hong Kong. She has curated Hong Kong experimental videos programs for Over View (a world tour international project, 2014-15) and other international films and videos festivals like Asian Experimental Video Festival in Macao (2017, 2015, 2011), EX!T 2010: Experimental Media Festival in Taiwan and EXiS: Experimental Film/Video Festival in Seoul (2009). She has also curated exhibitions “Making the Familiar Unfamiliar @ Hong Kong Park” in 2009, “Playground” for Kao Yuan University in Taiwan in 2006 and “Wo Man: Feminine Art Exhibition” for Old Ladies House in Macau in 2001. Her derivative video program “Second Hand Material Original Works” was shown in Kuala Lumpur, Macau and Hong Kong in 2011. Her articles were published in ArtAsiaPacific magazine in 2016, Film Appreciation Journal in Taiwan in 2010, and Contemporary Art and Investment in Mainland China in 2010.

Phoebe Man is the Specialist of Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications and served as the Advisor and the Examiner of Hong Kong Arts Development Council and was also a member of Curriculum Development Council Committee on Arts Education of Hong Kong Education and Manpower Bureau.
